DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University men's volleyball split matches with St. John Fisher University and Regent University on Friday, falling to St. John Fisher in straight sets and defeating Regent in five sets.
In the first match, Averett (4-11, 0-5 ODAC) dropped a 3-0 decision to St. John Fisher (11-9, 1-3 UVC) with scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-17. The Cougars were led by sophomore
Yerai Collazo with nine kills, while senior
Nicholas Breen added seven. Sophomore
Liam Audrain finished with four kills and two digs, while freshman setter
Luke Brown dished out 23 assists. Freshman
Julian Hernandez anchored the defense with eight digs.
Averett bounced back in the evening match with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Regent (2-10, 0-0 C2C). After dropping the first set 25-20, the Cougars responded by winning the next two sets 25-18 and 25-19 respectively. The Royals forced a fifth set by taking the fourth 26-24, but Averett closed out the match with a 15-8 win in the final set.
Audrain recorded 15 kills and 15 digs in the win. Collazo added 12 kills and nine digs, while freshman
Aiden Williams recorded 10 kills. Brown directed the offense with 41 assists. Freshman
Chuck Freedman chipped in 10 digs for the Cougars' defense.
The Cougars travel to Lynchburg, Virginia on Saturday for a conference match against the University of Lynchburg and a non-conference match against Regent University beginning at 3 p.m.
