VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Averett University softball dropped both games of a conference doubleheader against undefeated Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
In Game 1, Averett (19-10) was held to just one hit in an 8-0 loss. Sophomore Brianna Brooks accounted for the Cougars' lone hit, while Virginia Wesleyan (30-0, 12-0 ODAC) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Senior Hannah Zabik took the loss in the circle for Averett after allowing five runs in two innings, while freshman Cora Liggon pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief.
In game two, Averett again struggled offensively, managing just one hit in a 4-0 defeat. Junior Kadence Woodlief recorded the Cougars' only hit of the game. Virginia Wesleyan took control with a three-run second inning and added another run in the fourth.
Junior Kaci Stephenson pitched a complete game for Averett, allowing four runs on five hits with three of them being earned.Â
The Cougars continue ODAC play on Sunday when they face Randolph-Macon College for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
