DANVILLE, Va. — Averett held off Methodist Universiy down the stretch for a 50-45 conference victory on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.

Although Averett (7-3, 3-0 USA South) struggled offensively for most of the night, the Cougars made baskets at the right time. The Cougars rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to tie the game twice before junior Mette Scheiman's jumper put them in front 44-43 with 2:08 to play.

Methodist (4-6, 1-2 USA South) tied the game with a free throw at the other end, but senior Kyana Smith answered with a layup to put Averett back in front. Senior Liz Martin hit four free throws in the final 1:17 to seal the game.

Smith tied her career-high of 17 rebounds — the fourth 17-rebound game for her this season — and added 12 points despite being in foul trouble for most of the game. Martin finished with a team-high 13 points along with a career-high 14 rebounds. Scheiman and sophomore Shannon Smith chipped in with eight points each for Averett, which remained unbeaten in conference play.

T.T. Taylor led Methodist with 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars trailed 25-21 at halftime after shooting less than 30 percent from the floor in the opening period.

Averett travels to Ferrum College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
