Pyron steps aside as Averett softball head coach to focus on family

DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University softball head coach Ashley Pyron resigned Monday after two seasons with the Cougars. The soon-to-be mother of two is stepping aside to focus on her family.

"I would like to thank Averett Director of Athletics Meg Stevens and President Dr. Tiffany Franks for giving me the opportunity to be the softball head coach at Averett," Pyron said. "I've enjoyed my time here greatly and so blessed to call Averett home for the last two years.  I will leave behind a phenomenal group of young ladies who are set up for success for years to come. As much as I've loved being a part of their lives, it's time for me to answer the highest calling the Lord has given me — to be a mother to our two sons."

Pyron led Averett to the 2017 USA South Conference Tournament championship and an NCAA Regional appearance in her first season with the program. Over her two seasons, she guided the Cougars to a 50-44 overall record and a 24-14 mark in the conference. During her tenure, she coached one All-American selection, one Academic All-America selection, one USA South Player of the Year and one USA South Rookie of the Year and six all-conference performers while notching a pair of wins over ranked opponents.

Averett will begin an immediate search for its new head coach.

"Family is an important part of Averett's culture and identity and we respect Ashley's decision to put her children first," Stevens said.
