Each year, Cougar student-athletes who achieve success not just athletically, but also in the classroom, receive the honor of being named to the conference’s Academic All-Conference team.
As part of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference since 2022, the ODAC recognizes student-athletes who achieve at least a 3.25 grade point average for the academic year, and are named to the ODAC All-Academic Team.
In their first year as ODAC members, 110 student-athletes earned All-Academic honors. In 2023-24, the university increased that number to 143 on the All-Academic team. Averett then set another mark in 2024-25 with a current school-record 184 student-athletes being named to the All-Academic Team.
The university's success continued in 2025-26, as 167 more student-athletes had their name announced to the list, the second-most in school history.
Up until their transition to the ODAC, AU was part of the USA South conference. In all years prior to the 2017-18 academic year, the conference recognized student-athletes who earned a 3.00 GPA. Beginning with the 2017-18 academic year, students must have maintained a 3.30 GPA or higher to earn all-academic honors.
