Brynn Hughes, an outside hitter from nearby Dry Fork, Va., played for the Cougars from 1997-2000. She finished her career with 3.00 kills, 3.94 digs per set with a .326 hitting percentage. Hughes was the conference's Player of the Year in 1998 and 2000, and was VaSID's Player of the Year those same seasons.

Hughes was a three-time First Team All-Conference performer after earning Rookie of the Year and All-Conference Second Team honors as a freshman. Hughes was selected to VaSID's All-State First Team her final three seasons and was named to the conference's All-Tournament Team all four seasons, culminating with the tournament MVP award her senior year. Hughes earned All-Region recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2000. During her four seasons, Averett won four regular season conference championships, won three conference tournament titles and made two NCAA appearances.

Hughes was inducted into the Averett University Cougar Club Hall of Fame on Oct. 20, 2012. She was later named to the USA South Conference's 50th Anniversary volleyball team in 2013.
