Averett University Athletics

A four-year member of the Averett men's tennis program, Tapio Martti was a standout for the Cougars during the mid-1980s on the court. A native of Oulu, Finland, Martti was an ITA All-America selection in 1985 and 1987. He was voted to the USA South All-Conference First Team at No. 1 singles in 1985 and 1987, and earned USA South All-Conference First Team accolades at No. 1 doubles in 1986 and 1987. The 1987 NCAA Division III national semifinalist finished his collegiate career ranked sixth in the nation while leading the Averett men's tennis program to its first conference championship in program history that same season. He finished his career with a 92-16 mark in singles play. Martti was selected to the USA South's 50th Anniversary Men's Tennis Team in 2014.

Martti was inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 19, 2019.
