Jonathan Rumley starred for the men's basketball team for three seasons from 2006-09 after transferring to Averett. A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Rumley's addition helped the Cougars win three consecutive USA South Conference Tournament championships and make three NCAA Tournament appearances in a row. Rumley, a guard, was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America First Team following his senior year. He also was named the NABC South District Player of the Year, Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) State Player of the Year and the USA South Player of the Year.

A two-time USA South All-Conference First Team selection and two-time USA South Tournament MVP, Rumley finished with 1,186 career points and 511 career rebounds, both of which rank him among Averett's top 10 in each category. Rumley averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists and a program-record 2.3 steals per game over 79 career games. He holds several other program records and was the second Cougar to record a triple-double. He was named Averett's Male Student-Athlete of the Year in 2009, and in 2014, Rumley was selected to the USA South's 50th anniversary men's basketball team.

Rumley was inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2018.
