Courtney Cowart Phillips, playing as Courtney Cowart, was a member of the volleyball team from 1996-1999. Phillips, a setter from Rustburg, Va., tallied a program-record 5,369 assists over her four years. For her career, she averaged 10.72 assists per set.

Phillips was a First Team All-Conference performer all four years, and she was named the conference's Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and the Rookie of the Year in 1996. Phillips also was selected to the conference's All-Tournament Team all four seasons, including being named the Most Valuable Player in 1998. In addition, Phillips was voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State First Team and was the VaSID All-State Player of the Year in 1998 and 1999. During her four seasons, Averett won four regular season conference championships, won three conference tournament titles and made its first NCAA appearance in program history. During her senior year, Phillips was named Averett's Female Student-Athlete of the Year.

Phillips also played women's tennis and basketball for the Cougars. She earned USA South All-Conference honors in tennis at No. 3 doubles in 1998.

Phillips was inducted into the Averett University Cougar Club Hall of Fame on Oct. 20, 2012. She was named to the USA South Conference's 50th anniversary volleyball team in 2013, and on June 11, 2019, she was inducted into the USA South Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.
