John Thrower was a four-year standout on the Averett University men’s soccer program from 2009-12. He was the first Cougar in program history to be named to the USA South All-Conference First Team all four years while also serving as a team captain all four seasons. Making 73 starts in 78 career games, Thrower scored 12 goals and made 22 assists for a total of 46 career points as a defensive midfielder. He had five game-winners over his career. As a senior, he was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Division III All-South Atlantic Region Third Team. During his career, Thrower also earned Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Second Team in 2011 and was selected to the 2011 USA South All-Tournament Team. Thrower also succeeded in the classroom, earning USA South Academic All-Conference multiple times, twice being named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team and being selected to the Academic All-District First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Thrower also received the 2010 Dr. Frank Campbell Sportsmanship Award from Averett athletics.
 
Thrower also played one season of men’s tennis in 2010.
 
In 2013, Thrower earned a spot in the USA South’s 50th Anniversary men’s soccer team.

Thrower was inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 17, 2020.
