Former Averett University President Dr. Frank Campbell was inducted to the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011.
As Averett's president from 1985-2002, Campbell championed not only the growth of the school, but the expansion of the athletics department as well. Under Campbell, Averett added women's soccer (1993), baseball (1996) and football (2000). In addition, Averett built its North Campus facilities, which house most of the athletics department during his time. Campbell also served a stint as the president of the Dixie Athletic Conference (which was renamed the USA South Conference in 2003).
Campbell is also the namesake of Averett's sportsmanship award, which is given annually at the athletics awards banquet, as well as Averett's stadium for football, soccer and lacrosse, which was completed in 2016.
Campbell's contributions to Averett extend beyond athletics. The school transitioned from Averett College to Averett University, expanded its campus from 19 acres to 210 acres, constructed multiple buildings and facilities and added its Graduate and Professional Studies (GPS) Program.
Campbell passed away on March 22, 2016, at the age of 80.
