Jimmy Allen took over an Averett University men's basketball program that had gone winless the season prior to his arrival and quickly turned the Cougars into a perennial conference power during his six seasons at Averett between 2004 and 2010. Allen's teams went 97-70, winning three USA South Conference regular season titles and three conference tournament championships while making three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2008-09 squad advanced to the second round. The three-time USA South Coach of the Year holds the program's coaching records for highest winning percentage overall and in conference play.

In addition to coaching men's basketball, Allen also served as Averett's Assistant Director of Athletics for Community Outreach during his final year with the Cougars. For three straight seasons, Allen’s teams have been selected by their peers in the USA South Conference as the winners of the Sportsmanship Award. In May of 2007, the team was also presented with the Community Youth Service Award by the Dan River Center for Voluntarism. In 2008, the team received recognition from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville.

Allen departed following the 2009-10 season to become an assistant coach at Division I Army West Point, where he eventually became the head coach prior to the 2016-17 season.

Allen was inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 29, 2018.
